4C Food Security

4C's Food Security certification, a voluntary extension developed in partnership with the FSS, demonstrates the concern of coffee industry groups along the chain with human rights.

4C and FSS have joined forces to develop a voluntary extension of the 4C basic requirements based on the principles, criteria and indicators of the FSS (Food Safety Standard), the so-called 4C Food Safety Supplement.

The 4C is the only coffee certification to integrate the FSS, an international method that guarantees that food can be eaten safely. This method was established by WWF, Welthungerhilfe and ZEF, with support from the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

By adopting the 4C Food Safety Add-on certification, companies along the chain can demonstrate human rights due diligence and commitment to the Human Right to Adequate Food and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

This 4C Add-on is now available for coffee producer groups interested in being the first to apply.

What is assessed during the 4C Food Security certification?

Compliance with the basic 4C sustainability criteria and the desire to strengthen food security through credible third-party certification are assessed. Once a 4C Facility submits an application to participate in this voluntary extension of 4C certification, it becomes part of the regular certification and audit procedures established, including on-site audits, annual updates, and improvement plans.
